​The Room Goes Cold​

Acts 4:2 (CSB)
“because they were annoyed that they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead.”

Peter and John healed a man at the temple at three in the afternoon (Acts 3:1). The doors did not fly open until it was nearly evening. That is roughly three hours of preaching before anyone stopped him.

And notice what stopped him. Not the miracle. Read verse 2 again. They were annoyed at the teaching, and specifically at one name attached to it. The name of Jesus was the issue then, and the name of Jesus is still the issue now.

Zoom out for a moment. Acts runs twenty-eight chapters. We are four chapters in and the church is already in chains. They got a few weeks of being an interesting movement, and then the temple doors kicked open. So the arrest is not the exception in this book. It is the pattern. The apostles preach Christ and some believe. The apostles preach the same Christ and others arrest them.

Our chains are quieter. Social pressure. Professional consequences. A family that changes the subject. If that is where you are, hear it from your pastor: do not be surprised. Opposition is not proof that something has gone wrong. Sometimes it is proof the name has been heard clearly.

Be honest about the other side of it, though. Not every uncomfortable conversation is persecution. Sometimes Christians are just jerks. Sometimes we are being obnoxious for Christ instead of clear about Christ. But you can be kind and gracious and faithful, and the room still goes cold at His name. These two had just given a man his legs back, and they were arrested anyway. The church could end poverty and educate every child and the world would still trip over that one name.

Because the offense in verse 2 was never bad manners. It was a resurrection. A dead Jesus can be admired and managed. A risen One cannot. The name costs something precisely because He is alive. So when was the last time it cost you anything?

Reflect

Think back over the last month and find one moment when you could have said His name and reached for a safer word instead. Name it honestly, without excusing it and without flogging yourself over it. Ask what you were actually protecting. Then say His name in the next conversation where He belongs.
