​Eyes That Have Seen Everything​

Revelation 4:8 (CSB)
“Each of the four living creatures had six wings; they were covered with eyes around and inside. Day and night they never stop, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God, the Almighty, who was, who is, and who is to come.”

The room is not quiet. Flashes of lightning and rumblings and peals of thunder come off the throne (Revelation 4:5). That is Sinai weather, the holy power of the God who speaks and makes a mountain tremble. If you have grown casual with God, this room will cure it.

Look at the floor next. Something like a sea of glass, clear as crystal, lies before the throne (Revelation 4:6), and Israel’s elders once looked down through that same bright pavement on the mountain (Exodus 24:10). Imagine crossing it. Imagine walking toward the throne of God on what looks like open air. It would terrify me. You do not stroll casually into this court.

Then the creatures. Lion, ox, man, and eagle, which gathers the wild, the domestic, the human, and the airborne, all of them before their Maker. They are covered with eyes, in front and in back, around and inside.

Sit with what that means. They have seen everything there is to see. Having seen all of it, they would still rather look at Him. They never stop saying holy, holy, holy, and they are asking for nothing. They are simply declaring what is true.

In heaven they are so taken up with worship that they are not even thinking about what is going on down here. Even angels lean in to look into the wonders of the gospel (1 Peter 1:12).

That is the true order of the universe. The wonder those eyes cannot exhaust is the gospel, and the door into it was opened by Christ, who invites you up.

Reflect

Ask what has made God ordinary to you lately. Read Revelation 4:5-8 today without hurrying and let the lightning and the thunder do their work. Worship is not a mood you manufacture. It is the honest response to what is actually there.

Pray

Lord God, the Almighty, I have been casual with You. I have handled holy things with cold hands and called it familiarity. Give me back the fear that belongs to You, and give me the wonder with it. Teach me to say holy and mean it. In the name of Jesus Christ I pray. Amen.
