Revelation 4:2 (CSB)
“Immediately I was in the Spirit, and there was a throne in heaven and someone was seated on it.”

Most of us come to Revelation wanting to know what happens next. That is a fair thing to want, and the book does not shame the question. It redirects your eyes.

The voice at the open door is the trumpet voice John heard in chapter one, the voice of the risen Christ who laid a hand on him and told him not to be afraid (Revelation 1:17-18). Come up here, He says, and I will show you what must take place after this.

Then watch what John reports first. Not a timetable. Not a date. Not a sequence of events. Heaven’s first word to a frightened church is a description of God. We come asking when. Heaven answers who.

The Greek calls Him the One who sits. The participle is present tense, and it means He is settled in, continuing to rule. God is not pacing before the news. He is not wringing His hands. Everything in this book moves. God does not.

Remember who was reading this. A church at Pergamum had already buried Antipas, killed for words he would not take back (Revelation 2:13). Heaven does not hand those people a calendar. Heaven shows them a throne with Someone on it, and it is Christ Himself who opened the door and carried John up to see it.

So the cure for your fear is not more information. It is a better acquaintance with the One seated there. Whatever happens in Demorest this week, that throne is occupied. Before you reach for your phone to learn what happens next, look here first.

Reflect

Name where you go first when you are afraid. Tomorrow, before you open the news, read Revelation 4:1-3 and say out loud that the throne is occupied. Ask God for a better acquaintance with Himself rather than a better forecast.

Pray

Heavenly Father, I confess that I want a calendar more than I want You. I keep asking when, and You keep showing me who. Settle me this week with the sight of Your throne. Teach me to trust You before I know what comes next. In the name of Jesus Christ I pray. Amen.
