​Hold Us to the Very End​

At Mt. Carmel we open worship by praying a psalm back to God, and what follows is that prayer as it was prayed aloud. Each prayer is written from the psalm alongside Spurgeon’s Treasury of David and Augustine’s Expositions of the Psalms. This one is from Psalm 121, a song of ascents about the LORD who never sleeps.

God of Jacob, You never sleep. Steady us this morning under Your watch. You are our help.

Psalm 121:1-2 (CSB)
I lift my eyes toward the mountains. Where will my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth.

Heavenly Father, this morning we still lift our eyes because we cannot protect ourselves. We have locked the doors and lain awake at night. Our help comes from You, and the hand that made heaven and earth is strong enough to hold us.

Psalm 121:3-4 (CSB)
He will not allow your foot to slip; your Protector will not slumber. Indeed, the Protector of Israel does not slumber or sleep.

Lord, we thank You for Your unbroken watch. Faithful God, our feet slip when we are proud, so we ask that You hold us. Every watchman nods off now and then, but You have never once closed Your eyes on us.

Psalm 121:5-6 (CSB)
The LORD protects you; the LORD is a shelter right by your side. The sun will not strike you by day or the moon by night.

You are our shelter. Lord, be our shelter right by our side, as near to us as our own shadow. Plenty has burned us in this life, and so has loss. Shade us from both; keep us to the end.

Psalm 121:7-8 (CSB)
The LORD will protect you from all harm; he will protect your life. The LORD will protect your coming and going both now and forever.

Lord, You are our protector. And we thank You that Your Son walked this road ahead of us and never slipped, not once. And now we ask You to keep us in Your name so that not one of us is lost. Protect our life, our going out, our coming in, and hold us to the very end. We pray this in the name of Jesus Christ, the protector of God’s people, who was kept for us. Amen.
